What are the benefits of a dementia forum, and which one should you choose?

A dementia forum is an online chat room where you can chat with other people either with a dementia diagnosis, those going through the process of diagnosis, or with other loved ones of someone living with dementia. A dementia forum is a place to post questions and hear answers from others who have had similar experiences. It’s a way of sharing information and learning more. A dementia forum can be an immeasurable source of support as you get to communicate with others in the same boat.

Understanding: If you are experiencing memory issues or your loved one is, you may find that this is a bewildering and confusing time. It’s worrying thinking about what lies ahead. Talking to other people who are going through the same thing, or have been recently, can help you navigate the process.
Advice: On the dementia journey, it’s often a case of not knowing something or that an avenue of help exists. From knowing the best tech gadgets to make it easier to follow processes to ways to better manage medication side effects, getting tips and advice from others is helpful.
Support: Being the loved one of someone with dementia can bring its own concerns. Dementia forums are an invaluable source of support for family members and close friends. It’s often easier to reach out and share with internet strangers than it is to talk to family or friends in real life.
Engagement: Dementia forums are usually fun and engaging places to be. There are often chat rooms where you can chat about other issues and have fun. Dementia is a long term chronic disease. Being able to escape and have fun is important.

Which dementia forum to choose?

Different dementia forums suit different people. Have a look at a few and decide which fits you best. There’s nothing to stop you hopping from one to another. Remember that you can stay anonymous and should protect your identity online. Mostly, you’ll receive invaluable support but it’s also best to protect your and your loved one’s privacy.

Dementia Talking Point

Dementia Talking Point is the dementia forum of the Alzheimer’s Society and is the biggest and most active dementia forum in the UK. It is for those with dementia, their loved ones, and individuals concerned about dementia.

There are multiple different chat rooms on Dementia Talking Point covering topics such as having a partner with dementia, caring for someone with dementia, younger people with dementia, memory concerns and diagnosis, early stages of dementia, equipment, end of life care and dealing with loss.

There is an excellent section of this dementia forum that provides information and resources to those with (or seeking diagnosis of) dementia and their loved ones, but also carries dementia-related news and campaigns.

There are fun chat rooms including ‘books, film and music’.

Dementia

‘Dementia’ is the forum of Carers UK that caters for those who are caring for someone with dementia. It is the other main dementia forum in the UK. Threads and topics vary enormously, and range from individuals seeking and giving support to informative input and fun topics.

While these are the two main dementia-specific forums in the UK, there are other forums that cater to dementia-related topics and discussions.

Charity forums

Sometimes dementia is related to another disease. For example, Parkinson’s disease is strongly associated with dementia. There are unique topics to discuss when other diseases are part of the picture. Parkinson’s UK has its own forum where dementia topics are often discussed. It’s a lively and engaging forum. Other charities offer similar forums.

Mental Health Forum – Dementia

There is a dedicated dementia forum within the Mental Health Forum. There are interesting topics discussed, such as cognitive issues testing and shrinking independence. Unfortunately, the dementia forum is not highly populated which means discussions can be slow moving.

Facebook groups

Facebook groups aren’t forums as such, but many act in a similar way with discussions, support and relevant advice. Try to find one that is geographically relevant to you and where you feel at ease.

Quora

Quora is a vast collection of forums covering anything and everything. There are multiple dementia boards within it. It can feel somewhat American, but choose the board that sits best with you. With a global population, the dementia threads on Quora are diverse. Quora broadly works on the basis of posting a question and other users answer. You tend to get some excellent experts weighing in which can be really insightful and useful.

Reddit

Reddit has a subreddit called Dementia. It’s a popular and busy dementia forum. Again, it has an international following. You can expect discussions to move quickly and energetically. It can be a great source of information and advice.

Mumsnet

While typically known as a UK parenting forum, Mumsnet has a supportive and frequently used dementia forum. This is typically used by adult children of parents with dementia as a place to vent and gain support.

A dementia forum can help you feel less isolated concerning everything to do with dementia. It’s a place to exchange views and meet others in similar situations.

While a dementia forum can be useful, they aren’t the only means of support. There are various chat lines and charities, such as Dementia UK and the Alzheimer’s Society, have support lines you can use. Furthermore, remember that if your loved one is in a care home for people living with dementia then support is something that both you and they can expect. Chat to your loved one’s carers and they can offer advice, input and support on a more personal level.
