Shrove Tuesday Pancake Competition
Tuesday 28th February 2017

91-year-old resident, Pug Whitwill, awarded Royal Navy Service Medal

Patience Whitwill, or Pug as she is better known, worked on breaking the German Enigma codes during World War Two. After serving in many shore establishments, including HMS Spartiate in Glasgow, the HMS Beaver in Hull and a training establishment in Hampstead, London in addition to the Bletchley Park code-breaking centre, Pug was initially awarded the medal after leaving the Women's Royal Navy Service, but the award never arrived. The award was therefore a long time coming and the medal was presented by Royal Navy Regional Commander, Commodore Jamie Miller at a ceremony at Eastleigh.
