Virtual Dementia Tour

Between the 14th and 16th February 2017 we had a visit to our Raleigh Mead Home from the Virtual Dementia Tour Bus. 109 of our staff from all three of our homes took part and experienced what it is really like to have dementia. The staff had their primary senses taken away by wearing gloves, glasses, headphones and insoles in their shoes to distort their surroundings. This allowed them to experience the fear and frustration that a person suffering from dementia goes through on a daily basis and highlights that a dementia sufferer is not necessarily challenging or aggressive intentionally and it is often as a result of their environment, possible pain stimuli or their lack of understanding. We consider it very important at Eastleigh that our staff can understand how each of our residents think and learn to help them deliver a person centred approach and ensure that each resident is assisted to live as freely and happily; despite suffering with this debilitating and complex disease. MORE
